Japan Weekend Barcelona
There's always so much to do at a Comicon; from watching the displays, taking part in gaming competitions, perusing the stalls and waiting in long lines for food, but the Subcubs were in Barcelona for one reason and one reason only: to see Subwoolfer. Some also chose to participate in a Subwoolfer theme dance contest, either in groups or as individuals. The Spaincubs opened the contest with a tight group of 5 re-creating the iconic Give That Wolf A Banana routine. They were swiftly followed by numerous cosplayers choosing from the Subwoolfer catalogue. Hats off to Clare who took to the stage and really impressed with her moves to Dragma.
A different type of dance took place later in the afternoon, the musician immediately before Subwoolfer sat at an electric piano to play various theme tunes from films and anime, one theme saw couples spontaneously take to the floor for a gentle waltz. Seeing pairs of yellow wolves stepping gracefully around each other to the Merry-Go-Round of Life (from Howl's Moving Castle) is something that will stay with me for a long time.
As the hall continued to fill, our anticipation rose until the beloved DJ casually sauntered onto the stage. The crowd cheered with delight and the show kicked off with the usual, and highly anticipated, countdown from 10 followed by the electrifying opening notes of oooh-oooh-ooooh-oooh...The wolves had arrived and Give That Wolf A Banana was underway. Keith and Jim commanded the stage throughout and effortlessly segued into the next track. It soon became clear the travel back from the moon had re-shaped Keith slightly- a smaller but more chaotic version was playing to the crowd before him. From knee slides to elaborate hand-stands and gravity defying dance moves, Keith moved like he had an itch to scratch and the only way to scratch it was to dance. DJ and Jim were their usual, composed, selves. Fairytale and Dragma were greeted with cheers from the crowd and DJ took his moment to shine in Spaceman. Ever the ones to keep their fans on their toes, Subwoolfer further delighted with the unannounced appearance of Luna who joined them on-stage for Howling. The joy within the hall was palpable. But how would the wolves top this and end the performance on a bigger high than the one they started with? The answer lay within the opening bar of The Worst Kept Secret. The crowd erupted, the latest single which reveals the human identities of the wolves was being played out before us. Keith and Jim circled each other on stage asking the questions: Who are you? Who am I? Is it Ben? Is it Gaute?
The crowd roared with anticipation as Jim approached Keith to remove his mask; a short tussle ensued with Jim trying his best, even using his leg on Keith's waist for additional leverage, to no avail. The wolf masks were firmly in place today. Did it matter? Not one bit. The audience thoroughly enjoyed the comedy in the attempt and before we had time to draw breath, Subwoolfer moved into the closing number of the extended Give That Wolf A Banana and the invitation to join them on stage. After spending time taking photographs and signing autographs, Subwoolfer left us with a feeling of exhilaration that remained for days afterwards.
When you get the chance to, go see them.
Unmask
Below are just a few links to outlets that have published interviews or commentary following the unmasking. You can help make this list bigger by sending us any links not listed.
Eurovision
Once again, Subwoolfer has won a well-deserved award. This time, the recognition was for their fabulous costumes at the Eurovision Song Contest. The harmony of the black outfits with their banana-yellow skin made the perfect combination to the delight of all audiences. In the next link (7:24), you can find the interview in which the creators of Keith and Jim's outfits answer a few questions. They also reveal some little secrets of our beloved wolves. We hope you enjoy it. (And you may be as surprised as we were to discover that the great Cårejånni Enderud is behind the costumes!)
Norway's delegation has the key to a long life
Bananas and happiness
The interview it's in a secret location with two members of the Norwegian delegation who knows subwoolfer very well.
-My name is Matias and I'm the director for Subwoolfer.
-My name is Cårejånni and I do the costumes.
-What it's been like to work with two yellow wolves and a astronaut?
-It has been so fantastic, they took contact to us because the came out of space you know, and we told them about the eurovision song contest that they should be a part of that you know. But they didn't have a clue what that was and so yeah, we started to talk about what kind of song they wanted to do and they told about the things about the bananas and everything you know. So we started the rehearsal and try to, to look at how they move and everything so they find out this dance and I say that's perfect, let's go for it, this is perfect.
-They spread chaos wherever they go.
-Yeah totally, totally
-What is like work with them?
-They are amazing, it was a little bit hard to communicate in the beginning I have to say, but then we find out I kind of try to use my body language, you know, and they yeah, we find a way to communicate and now it goes really fine actually.
-What is your role as the director, what is your responsibility?
-I kind of create the whole act together with them, lights, staging, yeah you know, overlays and everything what goes in the number, that's my job and also I in responsibility over the camera directors to find the right angles and basically the storytelling is my job.
-What we see in the Eurovision stage has been months and months right?
-I have the first meeting with the wolves, I think it was in October, I think, yeah, when I started to create the number.
-Yeah seven months ago.
-Yeah, it's a long time yeah.
-And how does it feel now you finally here and your seeing the rehearsal?
-Amazing, we are so proud and we are so excited.
-One thing about them is you can spot them from the other side of the room, you know, they are very bright and they are very yellow so, how much work is go into how they look?
-Well, a lot, you know, you should see them when they arrived for the first time, we worked with fashion, theatre and television we just have strip them down to something more nice proper way to dress so.
-Here on earth?
-Yeah, but it is been a bumpy ride but is been a really funny ride and just to make them dress properly, you know, it's been really hard, now I think they're quite sharp.
-They would never made it wearing what they came from space.
-They have like a kind of cloth thing, I'm too embarrassed of how they came, we get rid of the cloth, let's jump into a nice suit, It was funny the first time they try it on.
-Are you proud of how the act looks now, the whole thing together.
-It's so sharp at in all and they do it so well, it looks, yeah I'm really proud.
-How long did they take to learn the dance ?
-We rehearsed, well maybe had five big sessions, and of course we have a lot of camera session in national final as well but I think we made five times, they learn quite quickly I have to say because, you know, the movement are from them is not that we create, they came with a lot of ideas to us, so this is how we actually move, that is perfect I say so use what you have and that's it all and now we have the number.
-Because they out of space. They are from out of space may not be able to see as well and they can't maybe see as well at stage because, you know how the appear how they look so, how you get out that problem?
-Well, they see what they want to see. Yeah, yeah selected view .
-A selected view?
-Yeah yeah yeah.
-Who is funnier, is it Jim or Keith?
-They are funny in each way, yeah you know, they have, when you see them is hard to tell who is who actually, the one is a little more chubbier than the other one, but, I would say they have strong personalities when you know them you can tell.
-So can you tell them apart now when you just look at them
-I can tell them apart
-Straight the way?
-Straight the way, When I see them, you know
-We can confirm you two are not Subwoolfer, right?
-No, we are not, but I would like to, I would like to visit the world they come from so it would be nice it's important to have some fun.
-Everyone knows who they are everyone sees them they cause chaos, they bring to eurovision smiles and spreading bananas
-Bananas and happiness
Bananas and happiness, maybe that's the secret to life itself, who knows but Keith and Jim where nowhere to be seeing although they told us a few secrets, but not to many, the mystery does continue.
Subwoolfer in
XMas Comics 2022
Gigs
On December 3rd in Turin, Italy, Subwoolfer performed at the Xmas Comic, a geek event dedicated to video games, manga, anime and cosplay. And we were lucky, so lucky, to see Subwoolfer as one of the star guests. The JapanWeekend in Madrid was the first concert they did in this style, which they successfully repeated in Turin. Their return to this beautiful city was long awaited. In front of a totally devoted audience they offered a big show which more than met the expectations of the crowd. Among the attendees were several cosplayers of Jim and Keith, as well as Luna and some Italian grandmas (who were lucky not to be eaten). Sadly, once again, no-one attempted a DJ Astro cosplay… We hope that Subcubs will be brave enough to accept the challenge at future gigs.
They opened the concert with "Give that Wolf a Banana", followed by "Turin". The audience went crazy listening to the anthem of their city. This was followed by "Howling","Melocoton", and their last big hit, live for the first time, "Having Grandma Here For Christmas". They ended their performance with "Give That Wolf a Banana", bringing on stage all the Subwoolfer cosplayers in the audience. Their interaction with the fans, their warm embrace, their friendliness, are the identifying features of this band, which, along with the freshness and cheekiness of the members, make them so attractive to both the young, and perhaps not so young. Once the concert was over, DJ Astro delighted everyone present with a DJ session. Those of us present were lucky enough to enjoy “Dragma” again, which had not been included in the set this time, with a performance between Astro and a cosplayer. For the first time, we could also listen to Space Kelly, a song that is not usually included in their shows. All this was done while Keith and Jim did a Meet & Greet with the subcubs who were lucky enough to win this fabulous prize. Once the photo session and hugs were over, the wolves returned to the stage again. But the big surprise was that there was a new song that we had never heard before...maybe it's the prelude to something new? We don't know, but ...
Subwoolfer i Het Grote Songfestivalfeest 2022
